On Your Mark: Michigan’s Best May Road Races

Ready to hit the ground running? With May comes sunshine, flowers, and plenty of Michigan road races. Whether you’re a veteran or beginner, an adult or child, there’s something for everyone. Save the date and check out the best runs spring has to offer.

Tulip Time Run – Holland, MI – May 4: The Tulip Time Run is an integral part of Holland’s annual Tulip Time Festival. Celebrating its ninth year, it consists of five races—a 5K, 10K, 15K, Kids Fun Run, and a Virtual Run. All participants receive a T-shirt, post-race food, gear tickets and more.

Heart & Sole Race – Chelsea, MI – May 4: The Heart & Sole Race is an annual run designed for people of all ages. Entering its 30th year, the family-friendly event includes a Kids Fun Run, 10K and 5K race.

Hero Mud Run – Fruitport, MI – May 4: The Hero Mud Run is an obstacle course that’s both mentally and physically challenging. Although it offers military-style training, this 5K race is for runners at every fitness level. If a portion feels too difficult, someone will be available to help or provide an alternate route.

The Super Run 5K – Detroit, MI – May 5: The Super Run 5K is a series of charitable events sponsored by non-profit organizations to raise money for their individual causes. Each run has a superhero theme, which means all capes are welcome. The latest will take place at Wayne State University and features a 5K run/walk and a 10K race.

Amway Junior Run – Grand Rapids – May 8: The Amway Junior Run is a great way to introduce kids to the joy of running. All participants receive a T-shirt, bib and finisher medal just for coming out. Don’t forget to stop by the Blue Care Network-sponsored Family Fun Area for even more kid-friendly activities. And adults can get their run on during the Amway River Bank Run on May 11.

Michigan Color Run – Ypsilanti – May 11: The Michigan Color Run is coming to Ypsilanti to brighten your May. At the beginning of this 5K, everyone starts with a white shirt. But for every kilometer they pass, participants are doused with a different colored powder. By the end, runners will be covered from head-to-toe.

Suburban Chevrolet Ann Arbor Goddess Run – Dexter, MI – May 12: The Suburban Chevrolet Ann Arbor Goddess Run is a benefit featuring a 5K and one-mile run as well as a 200-meter dash for children. In honor of Mother’s Day, the event encourages women and girls (goddesses) to participate making it a multi-generational affair.

Relay for Life – Rockford, MI – May 18: The first annual Relay for Life of Rockford is a 5K and Kids Fun Run sponsored by the American Cancer Society. All proceeds will support people battling the disease, as well as survivors, and dedicated caregivers.

Bayshore Marathon – Traverse City, MI – May 25: Entering its 36th year, the Bayshore Marathon is a favorite among runners in Grand Traverse County. Participants can choose from a 10K, half-marathon and full marathon as well as a 1.2-mile event just for kids. It’s a fun and exciting way to kick off Memorial Day Weekend.
